Description

"A pitch-perfect film. A story about relationships that beautifully demonstrates writer-director Nicole Holofcener's great gift for making incisive films that illustrate the way we live now."
–Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
"This gorgeous film, always tender and sometimes dark, is a deeply resonant comic drama that's concerned with nothing less than life, death, love, sex, guilt, and the urban logic of mortality."
–Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal
"A terrific movie. A Manhattan fable of guilt, fear, shame, infidelity, death, and real estate. Nicole Holofcener remains a dramatist of unusual gifts, unmatched in American cinema at the moment."
–Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com
"In "Please Give", Sundance regular Nicole Holofcener has made perhaps the ultimate New York movie...a finely tuned short story with every glance and gesture full of suggestive meaning."
Hollywood Reporter

Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener, this highly acclaimed original comedy/drama set in New York City stars Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Sarah Steele, and Ann Guilbert.

Kate (Catherine Keener) and Alex (Oliver Platt) own a successful Manhattan furniture store, reselling mid-century modern treasures purchased from the homes of the newly deceased. Wanting to enlarge and remodel the apartment where they live with their teenage daughter Abby (Sarah Steele), they've bought the unit neighboring their own. But before they can double the size of their apartment, they must wait with forced discretion fo the current tenant, ninety-one-year-old Andra (Ann Guilbert), to die.

As Kate's family gets to know Andra and the granddaughters who look after her (Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet), animosity, infidelity, friendship, and empathy play out with sharp humor and pathos. Despite their selfish tendencies, within the families there is hope for love, humanity, and generosity.

Please Give is write/director Nicole Holofcener's perceptive—and painfully funny—take on modern life's contradictions, good intentions, and shaky moral bearings.

Nicole Holofcener has also written and directed the critically acclaimed features Walking and Talking, Lovely & Amazing, and Friends with Money. In addition, she has directed television episodes for Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Bored to Death, and Enlightened. She lives in Venice, California, with her two sons.
