Description
Winner of four Academy Awards®, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Music
Hailed as a masterpiece at the Cannes Film Festival and featured on the cover of Time magazine, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an epic love story and a thrilling action drama set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, filmed entirely on location.
The film was based on a five-volume Chinese novel by Wang Du Lu, which has never been translated into English, making this the only book available for audiences eager to learn more about the movie. The project was scripted by Wang Hui Ling (Eat Drink Man Woman), James Schamus (The Ice Storm), and Tsai Kuo Jung. Marking Ang Lee's first Chinese-language feature since 1994, the film is punctuated by beautifully choreographed fight scenes and dazzling stunts masterminded by action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping, who worked on The Matrix.
The book features the entire screenplay, based on the novel by Wand Du Lu, and storyline, illustrated with more than 90 full-color photographs, many shot on location during production. These stunning full-color photographs reveal glimpes behind-the-scenes, showing how the amazing special effects were conceived and executed.
Illuminating the screenplay is an informative introduction by renowned film critic Richard Corliss and an essay by David Bordwell, an authority on the film genre and author of Planet Hong Kong. Included is a foreword and commentaries by director Ang Lee and sidebars by screenwriter James Schamus (Lee's long-time collaborator) on the history and tradition of martial arts storytelling and filmmaking. The book also features quotes from all the principal actors involved in the movie, including the two most popular Asian actors in the world, Chow Yun Fat (Bulletproof Monk, Anna and the King) and Michelle Yeoh (The Touch, Tomorrow Never Dies), along with biographies of the filmmakers.
Lyrical, profound, and strikingly beautiful, this book about the making of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will fascinate and captivate adoring fans of the movie around the world.
"A blending, not a collision, of Eastern physical grace and Western intensity of performance, of Hong Kong kung fu directness and British attention to behavioral nuance...The fight scenes evoke grand old movies with computer technology. It's contemplative, and it kicks ass. High art meets high spirits on the trampoline of the movie's plot. Ang Lee initially described the film as 'Sense and Sensibility with martial arts.' But it's not a hybrid; it's a new, exotic strain. Put it this way: a powerful film, a terrific movie."—Richard Corliss, Time Magazine
"A sweeping romantic epic with a strong feminist backbone [with] a generous offering of seriously kick-ass action sequences that make The Matrix seem downright quaint by comparison." —Michael Rechtshaften, Hollywood Reporter
"The first fight scene, which brings all of the prinicpals together, will make you want to applaud. And each action sequence builds on what has come before, increasing the stakes with a dignified hilarity...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon glides through the trees like its characters; it's an epic that breaks the laws of gravity." —Elvis Mitchell, The New York Times
